Dark-crowned Heleia
Heleia dohertyi
A distinctive small songbird with olive upperparts, a bright yellow underside, and a diagnostic head pattern: chocolate-brown head crest with indistinct white flecking, black mark between the bill and the eye, and white brow. Singles, pairs, or small groups frequently join mixed-species flocks in forests, edges, and cultivated areas in lowlands and lower hills. Restricted to the Lesser Sundas. Vocalizations include soft chattering calls, thin “tsip” notes, harsh “kit-up” calls, and a complex warbled song comprising whistled and whipping notes.

Male has a chestnut breast and white and yellow plumes which he raises above his back during his display, in which he flaps his chestnut wings. The male is distinguished from Greater by his yellow back and Emperor by his brown chest. Females distinguished from other species by their white underparts and black hood. Male gives a typical, repeated, nasal squawk.

Pied Oystercatcher
Haematopus longirostris
Heavy-set shorebird with long, thick reddish bill, black and white plumage, and thick pale-pink feet and legs. Usually coastal, but sometimes found on wetter pastures close to the coast.

White-necked Thrush
Turdus albicollis
Large thrush found mostly in the understory of humid forest and old second growth. Many different subspecies occur with significant variation in plumage tones, but all have a white collar, an olive-brown back, a yellow eyering, and a streaked throat. Subspecies vary in the color of the belly (brown or pale) and flanks (presence or absence of orange). The song is also quite variable among subspecies.
