South Georgia Diving-Petrel

Uncommon in tropical lowlands, mainly in forest borders, plantations, open woodlands, and second growth. Mainly forages at low to middle levels and, like many antbirds, often in pairs, which keep in touch by singing. Male is gray overall with a messy blackish cap, blackish wings with white wingbars and edgings, and white-tipped black tail. Female has similar wing and tail pattern, but is drab brownish overall, paler on underparts. Formerly known as Western Slaty Antshrike.

Large, long-tailed sparrow. Look for black stripes bordering yellow crown, especially obvious on breeding adults. Immatures are browner but still show yellow in the center of the crown. Often looks scruffy and not as crisp as White-crowned Sparrow. Breeds in low, shrubby areas of tundra or at edges of boreal forest. Frequents forest edges, backyards, and scrubby areas in winter and migration. Often in flocks with White-crowned Sparrow. Forages on the ground and in low vegetation for seeds and insects. Visits feeders.

A little-known barn-owl species restricted to the island of Seram. The pale buff face, surrounded by a heart-shaped thick black facial disk, is characteristic of this owl family. Note the dark-capped appearance and the crown flecked with white streaks. Underparts are entirely buff with widely scattered, well-separated dark spots. Upperparts, nape, and crown are dark and cryptically patterned, with buff background checkered with extensive dark markings and scattered with indistinct pale spots. Specimen collected in wet montane forest. Distinctive: the only barn-owl on Seram. Recently described; only a few records. Screaming calls reported from captive bird.
