Sooty-capped Puffbird
Bucco noanamae
Handsome puffbird endemic to the lowlands of northwestern Colombia. Note the sizeable bill and wide black breast band. Brown back and dark spots on the chest separate it from other similar puffbirds in range. Inhabits humid forest and mangroves, occasionally venturing into lighter woodland, and perches at low to medium heights. Song is a long series that starts out very fast and then slows down to a steady cadence: “do-wit, do-wit, do-wit…”
识别特征
The sooty-capped puffbird is about 18 cm (7.1 in) long. Its crown and nape are blackish to grayish black. It has a bold white supercilium that grays to the rear and a wide black line through and below the eye. Its upperparts and rather short tail are dark brown. It has a white chin, a wide black band across the chest, and a buffy white belly and vent with black scallops. The bill is black, the eye red, and the feet pale gray.
分类信息
Some authors placed the sooty-capped puffbird in genus Nystactes during the first half of the 20th century, but it was returned to Bucco by most classifications after that. The International Ornithological Committee (IOC) and the Clements taxonomy retain it there. However, BirdLife International's Handbook of the Birds of the World placed it back into Nystactes. To further complicate matters, a 2020 publication proposed that genus Tamatia has precedence over Nystactes. The sooty-capped puffbird and the spotted puffbird (B. tamatia) are closely related and may form a superspecies. The sooty-capped puffbird is monotypic.

The sooty-capped puffbird is found only along the coast of Colombia from the Gulf of Urabá south to the San Juan River. It inhabits humid and wet primary and secondary forest and nearby unforested areas. It also occurs in scrublands. In all areas it tends to stay low in the vegetation. In elevation it ranges from sea level to 100 m (330 ft).

The sooty-capped puffbird hunts by sallying from a low perch to pluck large insects from foliage. Other details of its diet are not known.<p>The one known nest of a sooty-capped puffbird was in an arboreal termitarium. Both parents delivered food into it.<p>The sooty-capped puffbird's song is "a long series of 20-40 whistles, starting almost at a trilling pace, then becoming more drawn-out and accentuated".

Tawny-chested Flycatcher
Aphanotriccus capitalis
Fairly small flycatcher with limited range on the Caribbean slope from Nicaragua to Costa Rica. Rather distinctive with combination of gray head, warm tawny breast, olive back, and tawny wingbars. Sexes similar. Found singly or in pairs in tall second growth or forest edge, especially in areas with dense understory. Occurs in the lowlands, up to around 1,000 m. Listen for a sputtering call followed by a burry whistle.
Cardinal Myzomela
Myzomela cardinalis
A small, strikingly plumaged myzomela with a bright crimson red head, back, and rump and black wings, belly, chest, and tail. Thin bill decurved. Female mostly dark reddish, with darker ruddy brownish coloration where male would be black. Seems to prefer forest habitats, but widespread. Unique coloration of both sexes should identify this species with certainty. Vocally shy. Common call is a repeated high-pitched, insect-like “tseet.”
Rufous-winged Illadopsis
Illadopsis rufescens
A mid-sized, chunky, drably colored babbler. Has a white throat and pale gray underparts, often with some darker olive-brown on the breast. Found in the understory of rainforest at low and middle elevations, usually in pairs. Shy and skulking, and rarely seen unless searched for. Similar to other illadopsises, and best located and distinguished by voice. Visually most similar to Puvel’s Illadopsis, but found in different habitat, slightly smaller, and grayer, less buffy, on the underparts. Paler below than Brown or Pale-breasted Illadopsises. Most often detected by distinctive voice: a series of several whistles in an up then down pattern that is weirdly reminiscent of trying to start a car.
