Shining-blue Kingfisher
Alcedo quadribrachys
Compact kingfisher with a dark blue back and rufous underparts. The color of the back varies geographically, and can be purple-blue or paler blue. Found along forested streams and rivers and in mangroves. Secretive, solitary, and generally uncommon. Call is a high-pitched “seet.” Larger than Malachite Kingfisher, with a black bill. Similar to juvenile Malachite, which has a dark bill, but Shining-blue has a dark face without any orange.

Merida Sunangel
Heliangelus spencei
Medium-sized cloud forest hummingbird found only in the Venezuelan Andes near its namesake city. Male has a glittering violet throat, green forehead, and a white neck band. Female’s throat is mottled and mostly lacks iridescence. Distinguished from Orange-throated Sunangel by throat color, white (not orange) neck band, and green belly. Formerly considered a subspecies of Amethyst-throated Sunangel.

Black-bellied Thorntail
Discosura langsdorffi
Tiny, coquette-like hummingbird. Males are iridescent emerald green with a black belly, bold white rump band, short crest, and long, straight tail feathers. Females are similar, but are duller below with a shorter tail. Compared to the similar Festive Coquette, females have darker plumage. Usually found in mature rainforest, where it forages at flowering trees at all levels of the forest.
