Common Scimitarbill
Rhinopomastus cyanomelas
An elongated matte-black bird with black legs and a slender, strongly-decurved black bill. Females and juveniles are browner on the front. In flight it has white tail tips and a single band of white towards the end of the wing. Avoids forest; singles or pairs are found in arid and broadleaved woodland, where they are found clambering around on trunks, probing for invertebrates, and often joining mixed-species flocks. It is most easily detected by its plaintive, whistled, three-noted “wheeep, wheeep, wheeep” call. The very similar Black Scimitarbill differs from tby having a shorter, less decurved bill and a shorter tail. Abyssinian Scimitarbill has an orange bill. Woodhoopoes are larger, with chunkier reddish bill, more social habits, and glossy iridescent plumage.

Kosrae White-eye
Zosterops cinereus
Small ash-gray warbler-like bird, endemic to the Micronesian island of Kosrae. Combination of uniform coloration, size, and pale eye-ring makes this species unique on the island. Forages in a range of wooded habitats, from mangroves to remnant native rainforest. Much like other white-eyes, often forages in active, fast-moving flocks, but can also be encountered singly or in pairs. Gives squeaky chirruping calls rather similar to those made by sparrows or small parakeets.
Yellow-billed Amazon
Amazona collaria
A chunky green inhabitant of wet forests; typically found in pairs or small flocks in or near the canopy. Note this species’ yellow bill, rosy throat, and white eyering. The somewhat similar Black-billed Parrot is distinguished from Yellow-billed Parrot by its black bill, black eyering, and green throat. When the two species are together, the larger size of the Yellow-billed is evident. The characteristics noted above also separate this species from other parrots that might have escaped from captivity. Calls include a a “maa-weep” and a “mwah” that is not as harsh as the corresponding call of the Black-billed Parrot.
Gray-headed Albatross
Thalassarche chrysostoma
Rarely found north of cold subantarctic waters; ranges south to pack-ice in summer. Adult has a gray head, thick black underwing margins like much commoner Black-browed Albatross. Immatures look similar to Black-browed overall, but told by black bill that soon develops yellow along top, and often with variable gray hood. Yellow bill edges narrower than the more lightly built Buller’s Albatross, which occurs to the north but is often mistaken for Gray-headed.
