Red-eared Parrotfinch

Erythrura coloria

A small bird of montane forest and scrub on Mindanao. Usually forages on the ground for seeds. Overall green with a bright red rump and uppertail and a blue face with a prominent red crescent curving around from behind the eye to the side of the throat. Note the pale legs and the thick black bill. Female is similar to the male, but with less blue and red on the head. The only bird of a similar size and color in its range is Philippine Hanging-Parrot, which has a hooked red bill. Voice includes a short, high-pitched tinkling trill.

Prairie Warbler

Prairie Warbler

Setophaga discolor

Small warbler, yellow overall with black streaks on sides and unique face pattern. Upperparts are duller olive. Reddish streaks on back are distinctive, but can be difficult to see or absent on immatures. Long tail is often pumped up and down, but not as consistently as Palm Warbler. Forages for insects in a range of shrubby habitats, from cedar-studded fields to regenerating woods to mangroves in Florida. Winters in Florida and the Caribbean.

Ijima's Leaf Warbler

Ijima's Leaf Warbler

Phylloscopus ijimae

An uncommon migrant songbird through Taiwan, rarely encountered anywhere away from breeding grounds on Izu and Tokara Islands, Japan. Olive above and whitish below; best distinguished from similar species by narrow bill with yellowish lower mandible, brownish-pink legs, and weak head pattern. Prefers mature coastal broadleaf forests but uses bamboo patches and conifers during migration as well. Smaller than Eastern Crowned Leaf Warbler, with thinner bill and no crown stripe. Song consists of a series of trills; calls, given often, include a descending “twee” or quiet “pee.”

Sumatran Shortwing

Sumatran Shortwing

Brachypteryx saturata

A small, dark songster of montane rainforest floor and undergrowth on Sumatra. Male is overall dark slaty-gray but slightly paler on the belly. Female is similar but duller and even paler on the belly. Both sexes have thin, white eyebrows and long, black legs. Forages on the ground but also hops on logs and low branches. Can be confiding but moves rapidly when alarmed. Superficially similar to Sumatran Blue Robin but shortwing’s tail is shorter and it lacks the white forehead. Song is a cheerful, random series of up-and-down whistles. Call, a sharp “click!”
