Blue-headed Fantail
Rhipidura cyaniceps
A medium-sized, long-tailed bird of primary and secondary forest from the lowlands to the mountains on Luzon and Catanduanes. Dull blue on the head, chest, back, and shoulder, with some paler blue streaking on the chest and crown. Has a buff belly and rufous lower back, rump, outer tail feathers, and wing, with dark central tail feathers and a dark edge to the wing. Tail often cocked and fanned while foraging. Similar to Black-naped Monarch, but has a rufous rump and tail. Voice consists of single sharp “pik!” notes given at intervals or sped up into a rapid series.

Magenta-throated Woodstar
Philodice bryantae
Tiny hummingbird with long tail often cocked up. Slow bumblebee-like flight. The only woodstar in its range. Male has purple throat and white collar, otherwise greenish with some orange tones on the flanks. Female more confusing but note small size and flight style; also orange flanks, dark cheek with white spot behind eye, and white patches on sides of rump. Feeds at small flowers at all levels of forest edge, also visits feeders.
House Swift
Apus nipalensis
Medium-sized dark swift with small white throat patch and rump patch. Commonly nests in building and cave crevices and often seen in small flocks over valleys, cities, and forests. Plumage pattern is similar to Pacific Swift, which has darker throat and very different shape, with longer, more pointed wings and long, sharply forked tail. White plumage patches distinguish it from Aerodramus swiftlets. Gives a high-pitched, twittering trill.
Dusky Munia
Lonchura fuscans
Entirely dark brown munia; widespread across Borneo’s lowlands and lower-elevation foothills. Frequently encountered in grassland, scrubby or weedy forest edge, and agricultural areas, particularly rice fields. Adult has a bright silver-gray bill and is darkest on the face and throat. Juvenile paler and more mottled, with a dark bill. Often calls while in flight; gives a tittering “chir-r-r-rip!”, as well as high, plaintive peeps and quiet “pip”s and “tsip”s.
