Yellow-billed Giant-Honeyeater

Gymnomyza viridis

A very large, robust honeyeater. Entirely drab grayish-olive, with yellowish wings and tail and a bright yellow bill and eye-ring. Dependent on primary mature forest, mostly in the lowlands, but less commonly above 600 meters of elevation. Similar to Northern Wattled-Honeyeater, but much larger, and overall more yellow with a distinctive pale yellow bill. Does not vocalize often, but most common call is a very, very loud, ringing, far-carrying “kee-too.”

Brown-capped Redstart

Brown-capped Redstart

Myioborus brunniceps

Attractive warbler of montane forest in Bolivia and northwestern Argentina. The broken white eye-ring helps distinguish it from other redstarts in Bolivia, and it is the only redstart found in Argentina. Also note the yellow underparts, rusty crown, and white underside of the tail. Feeds actively at low to middle levels of the forest and sometimes joins mixed-species flocks. Song is a high-pitched, ascending trill.

Taiwan Bush Warbler

Taiwan Bush Warbler

Locustella alishanensis

Drab brown and skulking, this medium-sized endemic songbird can be difficult to locate but can be confiding once found. Largely rich brown and unmarked, but some birds have a streaked or spotted pattern on the pale throat. Brown-flanked and Yellow-bellied Bush Warblers are smaller and warmer brown, with a sharply contrasting supercilium. Breeds in mid- to high-elevation forests and edges and descends to lower elevations in the winter; stays low in dense bushes and shrubbery. Gives a hiccuping song consisting of melancholy whistles interrupted by ticking clicks. Calls are harsh rasping insect-like notes.

Imperial Cormorant (Crozet)

Imperial Cormorant (Crozet)

Leucocarbo atriceps melanogenis

An attractive Southern Ocean crested and pied cormorant with white wingbars, pinkish feet, orange-buff warty caruncles on the forehead, and a blue eye-ring. Juvenile is duller, lacking facial ornaments. Restricted to a handful of subantarctic islands, where it forages in inshore waters; uncommon resident on Prince Edward, Marion and Crozet islands, where it is the only cormorant. Call is a grunting wheeze.
