Yellow-billed Cacique
Amblycercus holosericeus
Retiring blackbird of thickets and tangles. Heard much more often than seen, as pairs keep in touch with ‘question and answer calling.’ Creeps methodically in vines and tangles, and most frequently seen as it flies low across a trail or quiet road, usually with one member of the pair following shortly after the other. Note the pale ivory-yellow bill and staring yellow eyes, often striking even with a quick flight view.

Large-billed Tern
Phaetusa simplex
Unmistakable large noisy tern, with a long, thick yellow bill, black crown, three-toned wings (black outer wing, pale middle, and gray inner wing), and a gray tail. Juveniles have a browner crown and wings. Found along large rivers and lakes and seasonally on the coast.

Whiskered Tern
Chlidonias hybrida
Small buoyant tern. Breeding adult has distinctive dark smoky gray body and contrasting white cheeks (can look like broad white "whiskers" in flight) underneath a black cap. Nonbreeding plumage pale silvery gray overall with a faded shadow of the cap; juvenile has dark-checkered back. Note rather stout bill (albeit thinner than Gull-billed Tern) and square tail; compare to Common, Roseate, and Arctic Terns. Feeds by picking from surface, not splash-diving like typical terns. Common around wetlands, lakes, and rivers.

White-winged Nightjar
Eleothreptus candicans
Small, distinctive nightjar, pale gray overall with dark brown spots. Note the white eyebrow and moustachial stripe. In flight, males exhibit white underwings and undertail and black flight feathers. Found at a precious few open savanna grassland sites with scattered trees, especially those with numerous termite mounds known as earthmound fields.
