Yellow-green Tyrannulet
Phylloscartes flavovirens
A small flycatcher with a small range in eastern Panama and barely into Colombia. Look for a combination of bright yellowish-olive underparts with bold yellow wingbars and a white eyering. Rather slender overall with a long tail and a narrow bill. Sexes alike. Occurs in foothill forest from around 900–2,000 m, where singles or pairs are often found following mixed-species flocks in the canopy. Listen for high-pitched sputtering calls.

Slaty Egret
Egretta vinaceigula
A small, dark egret with a rusty-buff throat and yellow-green legs and feet. It occurs solitarily or in small groups, preferring marshes and floodplains; it avoids open areas, seeking cover in small channels or near long grass. Slaty Egrets walk slowly, shuffling their feet to surprise fish and frogs. Although it is mostly resident, it can disperse widely outside of its core range. The similar Black Egret differs by having a dark throat, dark legs with yellow feet, and occasionally foraging in a distinctive “umbrella” position, whereby it covers its head with its wings.

Black-streaked Scimitar-Babbler
Erythrogenys gravivox
A large, dark scimitar-babbler. Brown upperparts and white underparts separated by an orangish stripe running along either side of the bird from the face down to the vent. Lightly backswept mustache and a jagged band across the breast are made of the eponymous black streaks. Found in forest, edge, weedy fields, and gardens. Like many other scimitar-babblers, has a frequently-used and advanced repertoire of hoots, cackles, and rattles.

Tawny Tit-Spinetail
Sylviorthorhynchus yanacensis
Small, bright cinnamon bird with a long tail. Found at high elevations in pockets of short Polylepis forests and scrub, usually surrounded by grasslands or barren rock. Forages singly or in pairs in shrubs, calling and singing frequently; listen for high-pitched chips and twitters, as well as its song, an accelerating series of high, metallic notes.
