Sula Cuckoo-Dove
Turacoena sulaensis
A large, long-tailed, slate-colored dove with a conspicuous white face. Also note the red eye-ring and the metallic green shawl on the sides of the neck. Juvenile duller, with gray face. Usually encountered singly or in pairs, in the upper levels of trees in forests and forest edges, as well as more patchy, open wooded areas. Unique within its restricted range. Song is usually a series of six notes: “woo-ooo-woop-woop-woop” sometimes preceded by soft, short “pip-pip-pip” notes.

Tiny bird, more slender than other waxbills, olive brown above, blackish with white-spotted flanks below. Male with bright red face, female with red around eye. Cherry red rump obvious in flight. Found in arid inland Australia, in rocky gorges and hills with water nearby.

Large, robust gamebird of high mountains from Turkey east to Iran. Gray-brown overall, with white-and-rust streaking on the back and wings. Also note white-and-brown-striped face. Inhabits high, rocky mountains reaches from the forest’s upper limit up to the snowline; sometimes descends to lower elevations in response to severe snowstorms. Song is a loonlike whistling cry that rises and clips off at the end. Also gives high-pitched, somewhat raptor-like calls.
Common Babbler
Argya caudata
Faintly streaked warm buffy-brown babbler. Dark eyes and and pale throat separate this species from the similar Striated Babbler. A common and familiar city and town bird throughout much of its range; A bird of scrubby plains, open forests, forest edges, and overgrown cultivation. Whickers, trills, squeaks, and chirps loudly as flocks hop about on the ground and in low undergrowth.
