Madagascar Wagtail
Motacilla flaviventris
Elegant, long-tailed bird with a gray back, pale underparts, and a black chest band. White wing patch and outer tail are conspicuous in flight. Madagascar endemic that is found in most open habitats, especially those near water. Absent or scarce in some dry areas of the west and north. Feeds by walking along the ground, bobbing its tail constantly. Call is a tearing “tseeeiow”.

The Madagascar wagtail is a large, elegant and slender wagtail which has grey upperparts, a white breast and a yellow belly. There is a black band across the breast and the long tail has a dark centre and white outer tail feathers. There is short white supercilium. Juveniles have a less conspicuous breast band and a fainter supercilium. The body length is 19 cm (7.5 in).

The Madagascar wagtail is typically found around water, such as rivers, lakes and seashores, also in open areas such a rice paddies and gardens. It is found from sea level up to 2,500 metres (8,200 ft) above sea level. The Madagascar wagtail is endemic to Madagascar where it is found throughout the island. It is common and widespread and most common in the east of the island and on the central plateau; it is less numerous in the north and west, and rare in the south.

Golden Dove
Ptilinopus luteovirens
A spectacular and unique dove. Male is vivid golden yellow with peculiar hair-like feathers, a thin but bright yellow collar, and green bare skin around the eye. Female is mostly green with a yellow undertail, a brownish face, and green feet. She resembles female Orange and Velvet Doves, but those species do not overlap in range. Voice most resembles a heron-like croak or distant dog bark, given every few seconds.

Small plain bird with thin bill. Upperparts grayish brown with green tinges, underparts yellow. In male, distinct white facial markings extend from above the base of the bill to the chin. In female and juvenile, facial markings indistinct, usually just a light loral patch (above bill). Compare larger Green-backed Honeyeater, with pale eye and dark lores. Inhabits subtropical wet forests, usually edges and surrounding habitats, and mangroves.

Zosterops hypoxanthus
A small, mostly yellow bird with a bold white eye-ring and a black head with a bright banana-yellow throat and underparts. Neck, back, and wings olive-green. Note black edges to wings and tail. Found in forest, forest edge, and open plantation or garden areas. Voice includes a tinkling song as well as “zching” and “sip sip” calls.
