Sinai Rosefinch
Carpodacus synoicus
A small and long-tailed, small-billed finch. Virtually unstreaked. Male has a pink face and breast with a whitish forehead and crown. Female is pale gray-brown overall with a whitish belly. Lives in deep desert canyons. Resident or locally nomadic. Often flies long distances to water sources. Its rarely-heard song is a quick series of 6–7 metallic “Tzi-tzi-tzi-tzi-tzi-tzi” notes. Flight call a metallic “Tziup.”

The Sinai rosefinch (Carpodacus synoicus) is a species of finch in the family Fringillidae. The male has a pink face and breast with a whitish forehead and crown and the female is pale gray-brown overall with a whitish belly. It is found in the Sinai Peninsula and the Negev region of the Middle East, within the borders of Egypt, Israel, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. Its natural habitat is hot deserts. The pale rosefinch is sometimes considered a subspecies. It is the national bird of Jordan.

Dark-sided Flycatcher
Muscicapa sibirica
Small brown flycatcher with dark smudging on the breast and sides that lend it a “vested” appearance. Tends to prefer higher-elevation forests for breeding than Asian Brown and Gray-streaked Flycatchers but uses a variety of open forests and gardens on migration and in winter. The generally darker appearance of this species when compared to Asian Brown makes the eyering more striking.

An uncommon tanager of lowland and foothill rainforest. Male is black with orange flanks, white tufts around the edges of the wings, and yellow or orange crown and rump. Female is yellow-olive with a gray crown and white or yellowish throat; some females have a broken yellow eyering. Usually found in pairs that forage in lower to middle levels of the forest, sometimes with mixed-species flocks.

Small warbler with sharp bill that is very slightly downcurved. Plumages variable. Bright adult males are yellow below with black streaks, orange cheek patch, and white patch on wing. Dullest immature females are entirely gray with indistinct streaking below, usually with a hint of paler neck sides and greenish edges to wing feathers. Breeds in boreal forest of far northern U.S. and Canada. Winters in the Caribbean and Central America. Even in migration, shows a heavy preference for spruce trees.
