Chachapoyas Antpitta
Grallaria gravesi
Rotund bird with long legs and a short tail, endemic to the eastern Andes of northern Peru. Plumage is mostly brown with an orange tinge to the underparts. Very similar to Chestnut Antpitta, but found at higher elevations and has a different voice. Vocalizations include a “pit-grrrr” with a dry, purring quality, repeated over and over, and a rising series of vibrating whistles. Inhabits understory of high elevation cloud forest, and usually stays on the ground except when singing. It was described as a new species in 2020, and was previously considered a form of what used to be called Rufous Antpitta.

The Chachapoyas antpitta was described as a species on the basis of differences in plumage, vocalizations and genetics. It forms a sister group with Panao antpitta and the Junín antpitta. The Chachapoyas antpitta was formerly believed to be part of G. rufula obscura (now the Junín antpitta, G. obscura).<p>The specific name, gravesi, are named for Dr. Gary R. Graves, an ornithologist whose work contributed to the discovery of the Chachapoya antpitta.

The Chachapoyas antpitta is endemic to the eastern slope of the Peruvian Andes in the departments of Amazonas, San Martín and Huánuco. They inhabit humid montane forests and forest edges.<p>They are separated from the closely related Panao antpitta by the Huallaga River.

Tuamotu Reed Warbler
Acrocephalus atyphus
A medium-sized, slender reed warbler with a strong eyebrow and a dark eye-stripe. Rufous morph is rusty brown above and pale below with a cinnamon wash. Gray morph is cold pale gray above and gray-buff below. Found in woodland and open brush, sometimes in gardens and plantations. Call is a low, harsh “chru,” often followed by a short whistled song.
Rufous-fronted Antthrush
Formicarius rufifrons
Range-restricted antthrush of river’s-edge habitats and bamboo. Grayish brown, with an orange forehead. Found in successional forest with dense understory, including areas with bamboo or dense heliconia thickets. Listen for its song, a long, rising-falling series of musical whistles. Voice is similar to the slower song of Buff-throated Woodcreeper, but ascends faster in the middle of the song.
Sao Tome Thrush
Turdus olivaceofuscus
A large brown thrush with a yellow-tipped dark bill and scaly underparts. The juvenile is flecked buffy above. The only thrush on São Tomé, where it is a common resident in any environment with trees. Song is a musical, rich, varied whistled medley, “wee-eet wheeeoo, cheee chirrit,” that rolls up and down and is mostly given at dawn and dusk.
