Malaysian Plover

Small honeyeater with entirely black head. Upperparts olive with white underparts. Black coloration on head cuts off sharply to white underparts. Juveniles lack black head—instead have black around eye and brown head. Endemic to Tasmania and primarily inhabits drier forests of lower altitudes.

Dapper little finch endemic to Madeira, where it inhabits a range of habitats, from forests to farmlands. Handsome, brightly colored male has a blue-grayish cowl, pale orangish face and breast, and a black-and-white wing pattern (colors muted in winter). Female much drabber but shares male pattern; especially note the complex wing pattern. Both sexes have white outer tail feathers, often striking in flight such as when flushed. Song is a distinctive burbling, descending trill; calls include a squeaky “bi’dee” and yapping notes, often in series.

A typical house-martin, with dark upperparts, white underparts, a white rump, and a rather dumpy body. Differs from Common and Asian House-Martins by its sooty throat. Upperparts can have a bluish gloss if seen in good light. Breeds on ridges and cliffs, and occasionally around human settlements. Associates with other swallows and swifts, often gathering over water to catch emerging insects.
