Fiery-browed Myna

Enodes erythrophris

An unmistakable, long-tailed, conspicuous myna with a broad orange eyebrow, a pale eye, an ash-gray body, mossy green wings and tail, and a contrasting yellowish rump. Juvenile browner, with a narrower eyebrow and a dark eye. A montane species which frequents the canopy of forest and is usually encountered in pairs or small groups. Confined to Sulawesi. Frequently repeated call is a metallic, wet “wink” given singly or repeatedly.

识别特征

The fiery-browed starling is 27–29 cm (10.6–11.4 in) long. The male and female are similar. The crown, back, throat, breast and belly are dark grey. A bright reddish-orange supercilium starts from the base of the beak and extends over the eye, the feathers behind the eye being black. The flight feathers are brown, their outer webs and the wing coverts covering them being olive-yellow. The rump is golden, and the graduated tail is olive-yellow, with a cream tip. The beak is black, and the legs are yellow.

分类信息

Coenraad Jacob Temminck described this species by the name Lamprotornis erythrophris in 1824, and then moved it to the genus Enodes in 1839. It is monotypic within the genus Enodes, being the only species currently recognised. Joseph Harvey Riley described subspecies centralis in 1920, and Erwin Stresemann described subspecies leptorhynchus in 1932. The Handbook of the Birds of the World lists these two subspecies as "provisionally recognized" because they may only be colour variants, while the IOC World Bird List does not recognise any subspecies.

分布与栖息地

This species is endemic to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. It is found at elevations of 500–2,300 m (1,600–7,500 ft), living mainly in montane rainforest and also in lowland forest, elfin forest and forest edges.

行为

This starling usually occurs in pairs or groups, and sometimes large flocks. It eats invertebrates and fruit, often climbing tree trunks to search for food. Mixed flocks with the Sulawesi myna and grosbeak starling, both also endemic to Sulawesi, have been observed at fruit-bearing trees. Calls recorded include peeep, tik tik and various guttural notes, and the song is a repeated metallic zeek zeek.

Yellow Rail

Yellow Rail

Coturnicops noveboracensis

Exceptionally secretive little rail. Overall the color of a perfectly toasted marshmallow; back pattern more complex with streaks of gold and black crossed by intricate white bars. Almost never seen in the open. When flushed, look for bold white patch on the inner flight feathers. Most similar to juvenile Sora; separable by back pattern and habits. If you're looking at a rail in the open, it's almost certainly not a Yellow Rail. Found in moderately wet marshes and meadows, where it finds cover among dense grasses. Most easily detected at night when it sings a distinctive song that sounds like two stones being tapped together: "tick-tick, tick-tick-tick", almost always in alternating sets of two and three notes, often confused with cricket frogs.

Brown-rumped Foliage-gleaner

Brown-rumped Foliage-gleaner

Automolus melanopezus

Subtly-patterned foliage-gleaner. Warm dark brown overall, lighter below, with an orange-brown throat patch, and red eye. Found mostly in bamboo forests, as well as occasionally in areas of dense understory within mature rainforest, like vine tangles and in vegetation in upland ravines. Listen for its unique song, consisting of two or three liquid “wheep” notes followed by a chuckling trill accelerating into a rapid “trrrr.”

White-chested Emerald

White-chested Emerald

Chrysuronia brevirostris

Small hummingbird with short, black bill and completely white underparts; found in savannas, dry forests, and disturbed habitats. Hovers at flowers like other hummingbirds. Males sing a hard, rattling trill from exposed perches beneath forest canopy. Most similar to Plain-bellied and Versicolored Emeralds, but has shorter, entirely black bill; where these species occur together, White-chested may not be safely separable from them if not seen well.
