Rusty-capped Fulvetta

A fairly small, long-tailed bird of lowland and foothill forest on Mindanao and Basilan. Overall dull blue in color with a paler belly. Often pumps tail up and down. Forages in the understory for insects and often joins mixed-species flocks. Similar in size and shape to Celestial, Short-crested, and Black-naped Monarchs, but Mindanao Blue-Fantail is darker blue with a contrasting pale blue brow, tail, and wing patch. Song consists of a slightly ascending series of medium-pitched, upslurred whistled notes, increasing in volume. Also gives a sharp “wik!”

A rare and retiring partridge of mixed forest, found only in the south-central portion of China’s Sichuan province. If seen well, combination of orange cheek patch, striped white throat, and broad maroon chest band is diagnostic. Forms small flocks during the nonbreeding season, like many other related species. Duets loudly at dawn and dusk.

This strikingly beautiful sparrow is found in wet meadows with tall grass. Look for the bright orange-buff face with a silvery cheek, spotted purplish-gray nape, and crisp black streaking on buffy underparts. Secretive; difficult to see well unless a male is perched up singing. Most similar to Nelson's Sparrow but typically found in slightly drier habitats; also note white stripe down center of crown on LeConte's. Sings a dry, hissing trill with sharp introductory notes.
