Hoary-throated Barwing

Actinodura nipalensis

The combination of this barwing’s pale throat and weak eye-arcs is unique. Found in hill forest with dense understory at approximately 1800-3400 meters of elevation; occasionally lower, especially during the winter. Forages in upper levels of forest, often with mixed-species flocks. Gives melancholy-sounding “wheew-wheew,” often followed by a short trill.

Gray-browed Wren

Gray-browed Wren

Pheugopedius schulenbergi

Bamboo-loving wren found locally on the eastern slope of the Andes in northern Peru. Brown and gray overall with black and white face and mustache stripes. Gray underparts are unspotted; crown brown with black edges. Pairs or small groups skulk in dense bamboo, where they are most often found by their remarkable voice, a truly operatic performance of low-pitched hooting whistles given by two or three birds at once.

Sepia-capped Flycatcher

Sepia-capped Flycatcher

Leptopogon amaurocephalus

Inconspicuous small flycatcher of humid tropical forest and edge. Usually found at middle levels inside forest and also in adjacent clearings where sometimes suspends its nest under the eaves of buildings, including ruins. Mainly sits quietly and fairly upright; at times sallies to pick insects from foliage. Note the grayish face with a dark ear patch, dark brownish (sepia) crown, and buffy wing edgings. Call is a stuttering froglike trill, given infrequently.

Amazonian Plain-Xenops

Amazonian Plain-Xenops

Xenops genibarbis

Active small bird of humid tropical forest. Usually found singly, often moving with mixed-species feeding flocks. Clambers and climbs on small branches, twigs, and vines, mainly at middle to upper levels inside forest. Often hangs upside down like a chickadee. Note the bold white whisker mark, faint white streaks on the throat and crown, boldly patterned black-and-rusty wings and tail, and short, wedge-shaped bill. Where range overlaps with other xenops species, note the generally much fainter streaking on Amazonian Plain. Song is a short, relatively slow, high-pitched series of wheezy peeping notes.
