Tasmanian Boobook
Ninox leucopsis
Small brownish owl with dark ‘glasses’ surrounding eyes. Fairly common in a wide variety of habitats on Tasmania. Similar to Southern Boobook, and range overlaps in southern Victoria during the winter; Tasmanian Boobook is smaller, darker, and has more extensive spotting and a different voice. Call is a familiar ‘boo-book’ with the second note lower pitched than the first, higher-pitched and smoother than Southern Boobook.

Indian Swiftlet
Aerodramus unicolor
A small, brown, nondescript swift with a shallow tail fork. Upperparts are darker brown than the underparts, while the rump is marginally paler. Very similar otherwise to the more widespread Asian Palm-Swift, except that Indian Swiftlet lacks the latter’s longer, deeply forked tail. Mostly seen in the hills, where it breeds in caves, but can disperse to the plains during monsoons or immediately after summer showers, hawking insects in mixed flocks of swifts.

Timor Leaf Warbler
Phylloscopus presbytes
A small green-and-yellow warbler from Timor and Flores. Bill largely black, with a pale spot at the base of the lower part; legs dark. Olive-green above with a broad yellow eyebrow and sometimes also a faint central crown stripe. Throat white, contrasting with yellow underparts. Sometimes shows an indistinct single wingbar. Juveniles browner with no crown stripe. Found in hill and montane forest and edges in Flores, extending to lowlands and scrub on Timor. Single birds, pairs, and groups can be found in the canopy. Differs from Arctic, Japanese, and Kamchatka Leaf Warblers in dark legs, yellower underside, central crown stripe (if present), and lack of a second wing bar. Sings a short, high warble: “swit-swee-swit-swee.”

Brown Pelican
Pelecanus occidentalis
Large and conspicuous, gray-brown bird of saltwater habitats. Strictly coastal; rarely seen on inland lakes. Very long bill with pouch for scooping up fish. Forages mainly by diving on fish from above. Frequently cues into fishing activity looking for handouts. Often flies in long lines close to water's surface.
