Dimorphic Jewel-babbler

Slim, dark member of the fairy flycatcher family. Shows a blackish head, a slight crest, a large white lower belly, and broad white corners to the tail. Found in montane forest. Often in pairs, frequently joining mixed-species feeding flocks. A perky, active bird that never seems to stop moving, often fanning its tail. Separated from other crested-flycatchers by its white tail corners.

A large, crested woodpecker with a golden-olive back endemic to wet lowland and foothill forests in southwestern India. Separated from Common Flameback and other “small-billed” flamebacks by a much larger bill, a mottled black-and-white nape instead of a black nape, and a divided black horizontal stripe below the cheek. Separated from the similarly large-billed White-naped Woodpecker by the less clean-cut face pattern, a red rump, the lack of a clean white nape, and a preference for wetter habitat. A loose participant in mixed-species foraging flocks, often detected by its loud, high-pitched trill similar to that of Common Flameback.

Small brown bird with a very long, thin tail. Found in elfin forest and montane scrub around and above the treeline, where it forages singly or in pairs low in dense vegetation. Does not overlap with other thistletail species, and its distinctive tail shape distinguishes it from any other bird in range. Its song is a fast, slowly rising chatter of sharp, squeaky notes.
