Dark Pewee

Contopus lugubris

The only all-dark crested flycatcher in range. Entirely sooty-gray, only slightly paler on throat and belly. More obvious crest than other pewees. Sexes alike. Usually seen singly, perched conspicuously at the forest edge or in a clearing. Listen for “pip” call notes.

Slender-billed Greenbul

Slender-billed Greenbul

Stelgidillas gracilirostris

Slim, long-tailed greenbul with an olive-brown back and gray underparts. When seen well, shows a red eye. Found in the canopy of humid forest. Can be found singly, in pairs, or in small groups. The most common vocalization is a long, descending whistle: “teeeiow.” The contrast between the dark upperparts and gray underparts make this a distinctive species by greenbul standards.

Gray-faced Tit-Babbler

Gray-faced Tit-Babbler

Mixornis kelleyi

Dull brown babbler with yellowish-tinged underparts, a faintly gray face, and a warmer orange-brown crown. Throat and chest are faintly streaked, but not as evident as that of the very similar Pin-striped Tit-Babbler, from which Gray-faced can also be distinguished by its grayer face and less contrast between the more warmly-colored crown and duller upperparts. Forages in noisy flocks in the middle and lower levels of the forest. Ranges from lowlands up into the foothills. Mellow-sounding song contrasts with rather nasal, chattering calls.

Snowy Sheathbill

Snowy Sheathbill

Chionis albus

Unique, stocky, and rather pigeonlike white bird (actually an aberrant shorebird) of Antarctic Peninsula and islands. Migrates north in winter to Tierra del Fuego and southern Argentina, where a few immatures remain year-round at sea lion and penguin colonies. Typically unafraid; walks around boldly to scavenge and even eat feces. Plumage entirely white (somehow remarkably clean given its habits) with a naked pale pinkish face and a pale green and orange bill. Flies strongly with stiff wingbeats; does not alight on water, but will hitch rides on ships.
