Violet-tailed Sunbird

Anthreptes aurantius

An iridescent sunbird of forest and forest edge, almost always near water. Males are distinctly bicolored: iridescent purple on their tails and heads and white on their bellies, with iridescent green highlights on the wings and orange underwing tufts. Females are more greenish-blue above with a bright white eye-line, a yellow belly, and white cheeks, throat, and chest. Distinguished from violet-backed sunbirds by its habitat, greenish wings, and iridescent female plumage. Vocalizations are not well known, but are presumably similar to those of other sunbirds.

Eurasian Curlew

Eurasian Curlew

Numenius arquata

Scimitar-billed large shorebird of varied open habitats. Note large size, overall brown plumage, and long, decurved bill (appreciably shorter on juvenile). In flight shows white back patch, mostly white underwings. Common call an onomatopoeic "coor-lee." Compare to smaller Whimbrel, which has head stripes, a piping whistled call, and Far Eastern Curlew, which has a buffy rump and extensively marked underwings. Breeds mainly in grasslands, from coastal marshes to upland moors; winters mainly in coastal lowlands, especially mudflats and adjacent marshes.

Rufous-necked Sparrowhawk

Rufous-necked Sparrowhawk

Tachyspiza erythrauchen

A small, slender hawk with a yellow bill base, yellow legs, and orange-yellow eyes. Adults are slaty-gray above with a rufous collar and a vinous breast that fades on the belly to light pink in the north Moluccas and to white in the south Moluccas. Immatures are brown and heavily streaked below. Does not soar; typically seen perched. Inhabits tall forest from sea level to foothills. Confined to the Moluccas. Rufous collar of adult separates it from adult Chinese Sparrowhawk, Moluccan Goshawk, and central Moluccan Variable Goshawks. Smaller than Moluccan, Meyer’s, and north Moluccan Variable Goshawks. Paler-bellied than Moluccan and Variable Goshawks. Immature Rufous-necked Sparrowhawk is streaked underneath, without bars, unlike immatures of Moluccan and Variable Goshawks and Chinese Sparrowhawk.  Immature Meyer’s Goshawk is similar, but Rufous-necked is smaller-bodied and smaller-billed. Underwings not white with black tips, unlike Chinese Sparrowhawk. Gives a shrill “ki-ki-ki-ki…” series.

Couch's Kingbird

Couch's Kingbird

Tyrannus couchii

Large yellow-bellied flycatcher with gray head, dull greenish back, and brownish wings and tail. Primarily a Mexican species, with range extending north into Texas and south to Belize and Guatemala. Occurs in brushy woodlands and other semiopen habitats, often near water. Listen for single “pick” or buzzy “breer” calls. Nearly identical to Tropical Kingbird, which overlaps throughout range; best separated by voice. Larger and longer-billed than Western and Cassin’s Kingbird; also note paler brownish tail.
