Madagascar Serpent-Eagle

Fairly small and very distinctively patterned petrel of cool southern waters; regular migrant north to Humboldt Current. A “professional” ship follower in the Southern Ocean, often in groups that circle a vessel for hours. Extent of white spotting on upperparts rather variable, but no other petrel has this white-spattered or “painted” pattern; pintado means painted in Spanish and is also an anagram of the genus name, Daption.

Elusive dark quail found in the interior of humid tropical forest in lowlands and foothills. Forages stealthily in forest interior, usually in pairs or small groups, and usually runs rather than flies when disturbed. Sexes look alike, with erect crest, blackish throat, and white polka dots on breast. Sometimes in same areas as the much smaller Singing Quail, which is much more easily seen.

A mostly red malimbe found high above the ground in lowland forests, where it probes into clumps of dead leaves and dead branches. Largely red below and black above, but black face and red crown and neck give it a collared appearance. Females are duller than males and have red throats, whereas males have black throats. Found in small groups or with mixed-species flocks, sometimes with other species of malimbe, from which it is distinguished by its wholly red belly. Songs and calls consist of dry, mechanical notes linked together into complex phrases with rasping sounds.
