Mussau Triller

Lalage conjuncta

A rather long-tailed and long-winged bird with a short stubby head, similar in proportions to a small cuckooshrike. Plumage distinctively clean-cut in black and white, with mostly black upperside and white underside, broad white wing panels, and a white rump barred black. Belly often tinged with chestnut. Appears dependent on primary undisturbed forest. Often quiet, but voice reportedly includes a nasal “tchow-tchow-de-weet.”

Ramphocinclus brachyurus

A ground-feeding denizen found very locally in wooded ravines and valleys with thick low vegetation. It somewhat resembles both Brown and Gray Tremblers in shape but it has bold white underparts and a dark red eye, which the tremblers lack. Like the tremblers, it tends to droop its wings, but does not often cock its tail. Most commonly heard call a short raspy note, often given in series.

Papyrus Gonolek

Papyrus Gonolek

Laniarius mufumbiri

Boldly patterned black-and-red bushshrike with a yellow crown and pale eyes. The duller immature has orange underparts and a gray crown. Found in papyrus swamps, where it skulks with great skill. The male gives ringing “chonk” or “chuwee” notes, often in rapid-fire or up-and-down series. The female gives a low ratcheting call which is sometimes given in a duet alongside the male’s vocalizations. Similar to Black-headed Gonolek, but has a yellow crown and a white wingbar.

Bluish-slate Antshrike

Bluish-slate Antshrike

Thamnomanes schistogynus

Medium-sized, fairly long-tailed antshrike of lowland rainforest. Perches upright in the under and midstory of mature rainforest, bamboo, and occasionally forest edges. The male is slaty gray overall while the more distinctive female has a red-orange belly. Often joins mixed-species flocks, where it typically forages slightly higher in vegetation than the similar Dusky-throated Antshrike. Males are best separated from other plain gray antshrikes by more upright posture, slightly longer tail, cleaner gray throat, and voice. Listen for a short series of rising whistles that accelerate into a trill.
