Guadalcanal Crow
Corvus woodfordi
A medium-sized crow with a rather short tail and a massive pale dark-tipped bill. Found in lowland and montane rainforest up to 1250 meters of elevation. Voice typically consists of staccato cawing and rasping.

It is a short and stocky forest bird (40–41 cm in length) with a short, squared-off tail and a relatively large head with a very distinctive deep and curved pale ivory-coloured bill with a darker tip. The dark nasal bristles, though not thick, are quite apparent against the pale coloured bill. The bird overall is very glossy black with a greenish-purple gloss to the head and purple gloss to the rest of the body. The iris is pale grey or white in the adult bird and the legs and feet are black.<p>The voice is described as being reminiscent of the Torresian crow but higher in pitch and faster, giving an "ao-ao-ao" sound.<p>This species is confined to the central part of the Solomon Islands and can be found specifically on the islands of Choiseul, Isabel and Guadalcanal where it forages in small family groups through the trees, feeding on various insects and fruits. It is normally difficult to view as it often remains well hidden in the high forest canopy while feeding and even flying low, just over the tops of the trees when moving on.<p>As is the case with many forest crows, there is little information on the species' breeding habits.

Ross's Gull
Rhodostethia rosea
Long-winged, wedge-tailed, delicate seabird of far northern climates, nesting in open wet tundra and wintering around sea ice, occasionally moving into coastal areas. Breeding adult astonishingly beautiful: pearly gray above, rose-pink below, with coral-red legs, thin black collar, and tiny black bill. Nonbreeding adult has a tiny black dot near the ear and loses the black collar and much or all of the pink coloration. First-winter birds have blackish “M” pattern in upperwing and black tip on wedge-shaped tail. Flight graceful and buoyant.
Eastern Yellow-billed Hornbill
Tockus flavirostris
A medium-sized black-and-white hornbill with a big downcurved “banana” bill. Males have a larger bill and pinkish bare skin on the throat; females have a smaller bill and black bare skin. Found locally in dry savanna and thornscrub. The call is a long series of deep clucks that rises and falls. Easily separated from similar black-and-white hornbills in its range by the all-yellow bill.
Spotted Sandpiper
Actitis macularius
Small shorebird. Constantly bobs its tail while working edges of streams, ponds, and lakes for invertebrates. Several individuals may be found at the same body of water, but never forms tight flocks. Underparts spotted in summer; plain in winter. Listen for two- or three-noted whistled call as they flush from shorelines. Distinctive wingbeats: snappy and below horizontal.
