Napo Sabrewing
Campylopterus villaviscensio
Large, dark hummingbird found in cloud forest along the east slope of the Andes. Ranges from far southern Colombia south to northern Peru. Male has large blue patch on throat and breast, and a glittering green crown. Female has gray underparts; she is similar to Gray-breasted Sabrewing but has narrower white tail tips. Also note white spot behind eye. Infrequently encountered, though does visit feeders in some areas.

The Napo sabrewing is about 13.5 cm (5.3 in) long. Males weigh 7.4 to 9.3 g (0.26 to 0.33 oz) and females 5.2 to 7.4 g (0.18 to 0.26 oz). Both sexes have an almost straight black bill and a white spot behind the eye. The male's crown is glittering golden green and the rest of its upperparts bronzy green. Its throat and chest are dark violet-blue and the rest of its underparts dark gray with green spots. Its central tail feathers are bronze-green and the rest dark blue. Females have entirely emerald green upperparts and gray underparts. Their tail is blue-green with whitish gray tips to the feathers.

The Napo sabrewing is found from southern Colombia through eastern Ecuador into northeastern Peru as far as San Martín Department. It inhabits humid montane forest, elfin forest, and secondary forest. In elevation it mostly ranges between 1,000 and 1,800 m (3,300 and 5,900 ft) but occurs as low as 780 m (2,600 ft) in southern Colombia.

The Napo sabrewing's movements, if any, are not known.<p>The Napo sabrewing forages for nectar from the understory to the mid-strata of the forest. In addition to nectar it feeds on small insects by hawking from a perch. No details of its diet are known.<p>Napo sabrewings have been noted in breeding condition in October and November, but nothing else is known about the species' breeding phenology.<p>The Napo sabrewing's song is "a long series of two notes repeated continuously at evenly spaced intervals 'tslip...tseek...tslip...tseek...' or 'trrip...tseek...trrip...tseek'." Its calls include "a single 'chip' or doubled 'chirrip'" that sometimes become a short rattle.

Tanimbar Flycatcher

An unmistakable, little-known, strikingly patterned small flycatcher confined to the Tanimbar Islands. Male is jet black above with a striking white eyebrow, wing patch, and sides to uppertail. Below, shows a tangerine chest and a white belly. Female is undescribed. Found in understory of forest in both lowland areas and in the foothills. Song is a complex high-pitched warble lasting a few seconds, and rising and falling regularly. Calls include a very high “sweee” and a soft, grating “grrr-it.”
White-tipped Dove

Plump, pale, ground-dwelling dove with pink legs. Widespread and common throughout Middle and South America, from Texas to Argentina. Namesake white tips on outer tail feathers more extensive than other closely related species. Paler than other relatives such as Gray-chested or Gray-headed Doves, especially on the neck and belly, with less contrasting gray or rufous tones. Found in a variety of wooded habitats; more likely to be found in disturbed or scrubby areas than congeners, but also occurs within mature forest. Occasionally visits bird feeders, but otherwise shy and difficult to see well. Listen for low cooing song, starting with a short introductory hoot followed by a longer hollow note.

Like many other treepies, this is a noisy, social bird, often seen in flocks moving through the canopy and through openings in the forest. Extensively black face, silver hood, and lack of a wing patch distinguish this species from other treepies in its range. Inhabits forests from the lowlands up to montane areas. Loud, with a varied repertoire of whistles, clinks, and squawks.
