Russet-capped Tesia
Tesia everetti
A small, long-legged, almost tailless brown songbird with a rufous cap and a subtle pale brown eyebrow. An active bird of the lower understory in forests, forest edge, and scrub in the foothills and mountains, most often seen singly. Limited to some islands in the Lesser Sundas, where it is the only small, rusty-capped, near-tailless brown songbird. Song is a warble consisting of seven notes, rapidly rising then falling. Other vocalizations include sharp “chip” notes.

Yellow-throated Tinkerbird
Pogoniulus subsulphureus
A small barbet that frequents forest, forest edge, and even urban areas with enough vegetation. Despite its name, the yellow throat is not often obvious; instead look for this species’ overall pale whitish underparts and black upperparts with a distinctive white moustache. Shows a small yellow rump when seen from above. Not all individuals have a yellowish throat; this is more common in the western part of the range. Similar to Red-rumped and Yellow-rumped Tinkerbirds, but note the Yellow-throated Tinkerbird’s overall bicolored appearance, its fast nasal song, and, in the west, its yellowish throat. Song is a typical fast, nasal tinkerbird song with short, rapid sets of 2-5 “po-po-po” notes given at approximately 5 notes per second, often with hesitant pauses between note sets.

Kofiau Monarch
Symposiachrus julianae
A medium-sized bird of lowland forest interior on Kofiau. Slate-gray above, white below, black face and silver-gray bill. Undertail is white with a black band in the base and thin black line at the tip. Forages actively at all levels. Unlikely to be mistaken. Northern Fantail has a dark chest band and Black-browed Triller has white marks in the wing. Voice, buzzy notes similar to Spot-winged Monarch.

Writhe-billed Hornbill
Rhabdotorrhinus waldeni
A large rare bird of lowland and foothill forest on Panay and Negros, although almost extinct on the latter. Mostly black with a cream-colored tail with black terminal band, an orange casque, and a wrinkled lower bill. Male has a rufous head, a yellow pouch, and yellow around the eye. Female has a black neck and head, a smaller bill and casque, and blue and yellow around the eye and on the chin. The only other hornbill in range is Visayan, but Writhe-billed is larger, with a pale bill. Voice includes a three-noted throaty chuckle.
