Crimson-crowned Flowerpecker

This small streaky buff-brown ground-dweller is the only resident songbird on South Georgia Island, where it inhabits rocky shorelines, offshore islets, inland pools, and stands of tussac grass. Forages actively for invertebrates, running about and flicking its tail. Like many other Antarctic and subantarctic species, can be quite confiding, often allowing for close approach. Gives husky metallic “wick” and “tsik” notes, the latter typically given when in flight. Males perform a songflight display, giving jangling metallic phrases at well-spaced intervals.

Small and gracile bustard of grasslands, scrubby fields, and select agricultural matrices. Male is striking: black with pale wings and a filamentous crest. Light brown female is less eye-catching, but her size and shape set her apart from other similar species. Difficult to detect in tall vegetation; male’s crazy courtship dance puts him in view during the breeding season.

Multicolored, gregarious medium-sized woodpecker. Note black wings, tail, and mask, yellow forehead and eyering, white rump, and red belly bordered with dark bars. Males have a red crown and neck, which is black in females. Found in moist forests, second growth and sometimes plantations. The call is a loud “kiki-kiki-kirikiki.”
