Gray-throated Barbet
Gymnobucco bonapartei
Dark, chunky barbet with an odd tuft of feathers on its forehead. The eye is pale in the eastern part of the range and dark in the west. Usually in small groups on and around dead trees in humid forest and secondary growth. The vocalizations include nasal “squeaky toy” calls, “peet” notes, and a dry rattle. Similar to Naked-faced and Bristle-nosed Barbets, but has a mostly feathered head and a dark bill. Sladen’s Barbet also has a dark bill, but Gray-throated is separated from that species by its feathered head.

White-winged Widowbird
Euplectes albonotatus
The breeding male is black with a pale blue bill, brightly-colored shoulder epaulets (chestnut in northeast Africa, yellow elsewhere), and diagnostic white wing panels that are most obvious in flight. The distinctive display is a slow butterfly-like flapping. The non-breeding male is buffy and streaky, but retains the shoulder epaulets and wing panel. The female lacks the wing pattern and has a pale unstreaked belly. Pairs and flocks are resident with local movements in open savanna, brushy grassland, swamps, and cultivated areas.

Blaze-winged Parakeet
Pyrrhura devillei
Small parakeet with a long, pointed greenish-yellow tail. Has a brown crown, a scaled breast, and a variable-sized maroon belly patch. In flight, note the red and yellow bands on the underwing. Highly gregarious. Typically found in riparian woodlands.

Croaking Cisticola
Cisticola natalensis
Chunky, large-billed, streak-backed cisticola. Brown overall, without bright rufous in the plumage. Males are much larger than females. Found in grassland and savanna with scattered bushes. Song varies geographically but always consists of a rising note with a croaking quality. Larger than Stout Cisticola and lacks a bright rufous crown. Distinguished from most other cisticolas by large size and heavy bill. As with all cisticolas, habitat and voice are important cues in identification.
