Olive Sunbird

Small, drab, olive-green tinkerbird. The most distinctive markings are two yellow wingbars and a yellow rump. Also note the mostly dark bill with a pink base. Found in forest and lush woodland. Usually detected by voice: accelerating trilled phrases that are repeated, sometimes for a long time. Also gives a slower series of several tooting notes. Very similar to Moustached Tinkerbird, but only overlaps slightly in range, and separated by the plain face.

A largish, slow-moving warbler that inhabits thick vegetation from marshes to pine woodlands with dense thatch-palm undergrowth. Rather similar to Common Yellowthroat, but larger and more robust with a proportionately heavier bill. Males are entirely yellow below unlike Common Yellowthroats of eastern North America. The black mask of the Bahama Yellowthroat does not narrow towards the bill as it typically does in the Common. On the Andros Islands and New Providence, the crown is gray, unlike Common. Similarly, female Bahama Yellowthroats are more extensive yellow below but often have some gray on the lower belly. Songs and calls resemble those of Common, but the “tchuck” note lacks vibrato.

A slender brown owl with comically expressive golden eyes. Dark brown above and white below with long dark streaks on the breast. Its long tail and streaked undersides give it a distinctly hawklike profile in flight. Usually found in forests but occasionally shows up in small parks, especially on the coast during migration. Hunts flying insects at night and sometimes found around artificial lights. Gives an extended series of paired hoots.
