Stephan's Dove
Chalcophaps stephani
A small rufous dove with conspicuous emerald-green wings, an orange bill, and a pale forehead that is white in males and gray in females. Juveniles have duller bare parts, some barring, and reduced iridescence. Typically seen singly, foraging on the forest floor or perched low in the understory. Pale patch is restricted to forehead, and this, in combination with brown back and brown tail, distinguishes this species from Asian and Pacific Emerald Doves. Song is a soft “hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo,” gradually rising and accelerating.

Rosy-throated Longclaw
Macronyx ameliae
Beautiful pipit that is pink below and streaked brown above. The male has a bold black chest band and streaking, while the female is not as heavily marked. Found in wet grasslands, where it is generally shy and inconspicuous. Vocalizations include a two-part “dhew-dhew” call that is sometimes quickly repeated or extended into a long whistle. Separated from other longclaws by its pink underparts.

Blue-headed Parrot
Pionus menstruus
Medium-sized parrot, short square tail, body all green with blue head and red undertail coverts. Plumage is distinctive if seen well. Sexes alike. Note deep wingbeats that don’t come above horizontal on the upbeat. Screeching call note rises noticeably in pitch, usually given doubled or tripled.

Dwarf Honeyguide
Indicator pumilio
Small and nondescript honeyguide. Note the short but chunky bill and the white patches on the sides of the tail. Found in montane forest, where it is uncommon and inconspicuous. The main call is a repeated “tsee-you.” Very similar to Least Honeyguide, but even smaller, and lacks a dark stripe on the face. Similar in size to Wahlberg’s Honeyguide, but has a thicker bill and less white in the outer tail.
