Cinnamon-banded Kingfisher

Long-tailed corvid of Borneo’s hilly and montane forests; the only treepie in its range. Note stout black bill, black wings with white patch, and warm buffy brown underparts and face. Social and noisy; often encountered in flocks as individuals keep in contact with one another via an assortment of squawks, rasps, and clinking metallic notes. Can be fairly tame, allowing close approach, especially around trails and campsites.

Fairly common in the high Andes of central Chile and adjacent Argentina, where found at bogs, lakeshores, and along streams, usually with rocky slopes nearby. Migrates in winter to coast, where it occurs on rocky beaches. Relatively small and sprightly, often flicking wings and cocking its tail strongly, unlike the larger Dark-bellied and Seaside Cinclodes, which occur alongside in winter. Dark-bellied has bolder white head stripes and gray flanks (flanks brown on Gray-flanked!). Told from Buff-winged Cinclodes by colder plumage tones and white-streaked breast.

Rather undistinguished looking bird of humid evergreen forest in tropical lowlands and foothills. Typically forages sluggishly at middle to upper levels in shady forest understory; often travels with mixed-species feeding flocks and is easily overlooked. Warm brown overall with broad, pale buffy eyebrow, rustier tail, and stout, slightly hooked gray bill. Sexes look alike.
