Simeulue Scops-Owl
Otus umbra
Small scops-owl with bright yellow eyes, found only on Simeulue. Almost uniformly rufous-brown, with very inconspicuous (often flattened) ear tufts. The only resident scops-owl on Simeulue; migrant Oriental Scops-Owls could also occur on the island, but average larger, and have a more well-defined facial disc. Utilizes a variety of wooded habitats, from pristine forests to plantations. Listen for its song, a series of hiccupy piping notes, somewhat reminiscent of a barbet. Also gives a series of short squeals, which are sometimes mixed in with the song.

White-capped Monarch
Monarcha richardsii
A stunning medium-sized monarch. Glossy purple-black above and on the face and chest, rusty below, with a bluish-gray bill. Conspicuous white on the head extends back into a half-collar. Mostly found in primary and secondary forest, but apparently tolerant of disturbance. Common call is a wavering, haunting, ghost-like whistle. Also gives chattering scolding notes.

Makira Starling
Aplonis dichroa
A rather small, entirely dark starling with a glossy-blue sheen to the head and a more purple sheen elsewhere. Wings and tail are a dull matte earth-brown. Eye is dark. Prefers forest and forest edge, more common inland. Common calls include a long rising whistle, high-pitched squeaks and clicks, and melodic chattering.

Antioquia Bristle-Tyrant
Pogonotriccus lanyoni
Rare flycatcher known only from a few sites in the Colombian Andes, mainly in the northern part of the central range. It is fairly small and mostly yellow, with a gray crown and broad, yellow wingbars. Yellow and gray smudges on ears can be very indistinct. Often confused with the much more common Yellow-olive Flycatcher, but bill is narrower, wingbars are brighter yellow, and voice is different. Typical song is a short burst that starts off as a dry rattle and then morphs into airy squeaking. Inhabits humid forest and sometimes joins mixed species flocks.
