Gray-hooded Fulvetta
Fulvetta cinereiceps
Small brown bird with a bulbous gray head and staring white eyes. Typically moves about in small groups in low, dense areas such as scrubby patches and bamboo stands. Found at middle to upper elevations. Song is a distinctive and memorable series of three whistled notes: the first two notes ascend (second note noticeably longer), and the third note descends.

Mountain Leaf Warbler
Phylloscopus trivirgatus
Small leaf warbler of montane rainforests throughout Sundaland. Strongly contrasting head pattern with black eye-stripe, pale eyebrow and black stripes either side of the central pale crown stripe. Note the lack of wing bar. In most areas, birds are yellowish green above and brighter yellow below; birds on Mount Kinabalu are gray-green above and off-white below. Forages actively in upper levels of forest, often in mixed flocks. Compare with migratory leaf warblers. Song is a rolling series of high-pitched warbling notes.

Red-eyed Vireo
Vireo olivaceus
Plain olive-green above and whitish below with no wingbars. Red eye of adults is not always easy to see; immatures have brown eyes. Dark stripe through and above eye. Larger and thicker-billed than warblers. Breeds in mature deciduous forest. Often sings nearly nonstop throughout the day; listen for repetitive musical phrases coming from the treetops. Often with flocks of chickadees and warblers during migration. Winters in South America, where it could be confused with the very similar Chivi Vireo, from which it is best distinguished by voice.

Mouse-colored Sunbird
Cyanomitra veroxii
Large, gray sunbird with a long, down-curved bill. The wings and tail are blackish, while the underparts are paler than the back. Can show red tufts on the shoulders, though these are usually concealed. Found in forest, mangroves, and scrub at low elevations, mostly near the coast. Most distinctive vocalization is a short series of “chyep” notes that usually goes up then down. Olive Sunbird is similar, but Mouse-colored Sunbird is gray rather than olive-green.
