Common throughout their habitat and range, walking and climbing through vegetation when foraging. Will scavenge bird carcasses. An inquisitive bird, often approaching human visitors. Call is a distinctive deep “kok-kok-kok-kok” chatter. Shares its range with Reischek’s parakeet, but distinguishable by much larger size and lack of a red crown.

分类信息

The Antipodes parakeet was depicted in 1831 by the English artist Edward Lear in his Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots. Lear used the common name "Uniform parakeet" and coined the binomial name Platycercus unicolor. The species is now placed in the genus Cyanoramphus that was introduced in 1854 by the French ornithologist Charles Lucien Bonaparte.
Its closest relative is Reischek's parakeet, which also lives on the Antipodes Islands. Other relatives include the Norfolk parakeet, Society parakeet and Chatham parakeet.

The Antipodes parakeet is endemic to the Antipodes Islands of New Zealand. They are common on the main Antipodes Island, but are less common on smaller islands in the group such as Bollons Island. They live in very small numbers on Leeward Island, where they only live in a 0.1 square kilometre region of the island. The Antipodes parakeet also live on the 0.1 square kilometre Archway Island as well.

These parakeets eat leaves, buds, grass, and tussock stalks, as well as sometimes feeding on seeds and flowers, and will scavenge dead seabirds. The Antipodes parakeet also preys on grey-backed storm petrels, entering burrows to kill incubating adults, even digging at the entrance if it is too small.
Antipodes parakeets spend much of their time on the ground and in very small groups, in pairs or solitary.
They are quite inquisitive, territorial, probing and mischievous.
Their nest is in a tunnel 2 metres beneath the fibrous peat away from the wind.

Canivet's Emerald

Canivet's Emerald

Cynanthus canivetii

Small hummingbird of tropical lowlands, favoring forest edge and semi-open areas, often in relatively dry habitats. Usually feeds rather low, and often inconspicuous. Both sexes habitually pump their forked tail while hovering, unlike most other hummingbirds found in the same areas. Solidly emerald-green male is distinctive. Combination of small size, rather short straight bill, face pattern (whitish eyestripe and broad dark mask), and tail wagging behavior help ID the female. Also note the dry chattering call, which may suggest the call of Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

Fasciated Wren

Fasciated Wren

Campylorhynchus fasciatus

Large, noisy wren of dry and semi-humid areas; ranges from western Ecuador south to central Peru. Upperparts, sides, and tail are boldly barred with gray and white, and breast is spotted with gray. Similar to Band-backed Wren, but lacks chestnut on underparts, has paler breast spots, and prefers more arid habitats. Pairs or small groups forage conspicuously in bushes and trees, giving a variety of harsh, raspy calls.

Yellow-mantled Weaver

Yellow-mantled Weaver

Ploceus tricolor

A neatly patterned weaver that stays high above the ground in forests and old farmland, often near flooded areas or water, in small groups or with mixed-species flocks. Black head and vent contrast with the dark gray or reddish belly. Upperparts are black except for a bright gold triangular patch on the back. Engages in a wide variety of foraging behaviors, including gleaning, flycatching, and hitching up larger branches and trunks in a woodpecker-like fashion. Occurs with several other species of weaver, but note Yellow-mantled Weaver’s distinct upperparts and the contrast between its black throat and vent and its paler belly. Calls include mechanical whistles and rasps and dry chatters, sometimes combined in complex songs.
