Norfolk Island Parakeet

Cyanoramphus cookii

Chunky medium-sized green parrot with a bright red forehead and broken line through the eye. Also note electric blue wing lining. One of only two parrots on Norfolk Island; compare with immature Crimson Rosella, which is much longer-tailed and differs in overall coloration. Inhabits remaining native forests on Norfolk Island. Gives noisy nasal yammering calls. Previously very rare, but active conservation management has restored numbers.

Blue-lored Antbird

Blue-lored Antbird

Hafferia immaculata

Large, chunky, dark antbird restricted to northern Colombia and western Venezuela. Male entirely black with namesake blue lores and triangular patch of paler bluish skin behind eye. Female similar but warm dark brown instead of black. Long broad tail often strongly flicked downward and raised back up slowly. Usually seen in pairs, which forage close to the ground within forest. Can be shy and difficult to see. Sometimes follows ant swarms, but frequently seen away from them. Found mainly in the foothills and lower subtropics, up to 1,800 m. Listen for a mourning series of plaintive whistles, “teew, teew, teew, teew.”

Gray Cuckooshrike

Gray Cuckooshrike

Ceblepyris caesius

Large, chunky, all-gray cuckooshrike. There is a pale ring around the dark eye, giving the face a gentle appearance. Males are darker gray than females. Found in forest; away from South Africa, exclusively in montane forest. Quiet and unobtrusive bird that is easily missed as it moves slowly through the forest midstory. Call is a quiet, high-pitched, descending “seeeeuup.” Similar to White-breasted Cuckooshrike, but has much darker underparts and is found in forest rather than woodland.

Seychelles Magpie-Robin

Seychelles Magpie-Robin

Copsychus sechellarum

A large and distinctive magpie-robin of the granitic Seychelles islands. Black with a large white shoulder patch. In good light, the black plumage looks glossy purple or bluish. Found in woodland, gardens, and coastal forest. Formerly widespread, but now endangered and restricted to just a few islands. The song is a slow series of musical whistles; sometimes also includes harsher notes and imitations.
