Cricket Longtail
Spiloptila clamans
Tiny warbler with an extremely long, strongly-patterned tail. Note blackish wing coverts with white tips, gray on the back of the neck, and a warm brown back. Males have a dark crown over a pale eyebrow. Roves in small family groups in open acacia savanna, foraging in bushes and often on the ground while continuously moving tail. Song a rapid, insectlike high-pitched repeating whistle. Contact call a high-pitched repeating note "pi, pi, pi…"

The cricket warbler is a small, perky warbler with a long tail made up of twelve grey, black and white tipped feathers with the feathers getting longer from the outside to the centre, creating a graduated tail. It is pale buffy rufous on the upperparts, with black streaks on the crown and black tips to the primaries and upper wing coverts, a pale yellow rump, a white supercilium and whitish cream underparts. The male has a greyer cast across the nape. 9–10 cm in length.

The cricket warbler occurs in the Sahel Zone from southern Mauritania and northern Senegal east to South Sudan and northern Eritrea. They have recently been found breeding in the Western Sahara at Oued Jenna near Assouerd. The cricket warbler breeds in thorn scrub, especially acacia scrub, it even extends into true desert so long as there is sufficient vegetation and into savanna with broad-leafed trees but avoids grassy plains or dense bush.

Spectacled Bulbul
Rubigula erythropthalmos
Dull brown bulbul; paler below than above. Thin orangish eyering around the bright red eye is diagnostic, but not always easy to see. Very similar in appearance to slightly larger Red-eyed Bulbul, as well as to the red-eyed Bornean form of Cream-vented Bulbul; Spectacled is best separated by its combination of stronger contrast of the gray-washed head and breast with the rufous-brown wings and rump. Throat coloration of Spectacled is intermediate between the starkly pale throat of Cream-vented and the brown-suffused throat of Red-eyed, and its bill appears smaller and sharper than in the former two species. Song is a jumble of cricket-like chirping and harsh scratchy notes. Calls are a bright and bubbly series of notes--“pi-di-pi-pi-di-di”--sometimes with a descending meow at the end. Inhabits lowland and foothill forests, usually found in more mature growth than Cream-vented and Red-eyed Bulbuls.
Stripe-breasted Wren

Medium-sized wren, brown above with bold black-and-white streaking on face and breast. Distinctive in range. Fond of viney tangles at middle heights, but can be difficult to see through vegetation. Variable song always includes sweet repeated whistles, sometimes very simple but can be more complex, similar to other wrens.
Golden-shouldered Parrot
Psephotellus chrysopterygius
Slender, long-tailed parrot restricted to a tiny range in tropical savanna woodland in far northern Queensland. Male a striking turquoise color, with red lower belly, tiny black cap, and yellow forecrown. Wings pale grayish brown with yellow band. Female primarily green with turquoise wash on face and underparts. This species digs tunnels in termite mounds in order to breed.
