Midget Flowerpecker
Dicaeum aeneum
A tiny, constantly moving bird with a short bill. Head, back, and chest are gray with a bright crimson chest patch. Throat is clean white, belly yellow or grayish-buff. Found in all forest and scrub habitats. Short bill eliminates confusion with sunbirds and myzomelas. Common calls include a rapid “tik-tik-tik-tik” and a high-pitched “sweet sweet.”

The midget flowerpecker (Dicaeum aeneum) is a species of bird in the family Dicaeidae. It is found in the Solomon Islands archipelago. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical mangrove forest, and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. The females have dark wings with a white and yellow stomach. The males have the same features but have a red upper chest. Their call is a short and high-pitched tik-tik-tik. This species does not migrate and has inhabited the Solomon Islands since 1900. The number of midget flowerpeckers is unknown, but they are a stable species.

Choco Tapaculo
Scytalopus chocoensis
A standard Scytalopus tapaculo: plain dark gray with browner flanks and rump. Acts like a mouse, scurrying around on or near the ground within forests. Very difficult to see. Restricted range on west slope of Andes in Colombia and Ecuador. Occurs from around 350–1,000 m elevation, lower than Nariño Tapaculo. Far more often heard than seen. Listen for fairly slow series of piercing “peew” notes, much slower than Nariño.

Large mockingbird found in a variety of open non-forest habitats including urban areas. Brownish-gray above and pale below with a white-tipped tail. Note the conspicuous broad white eyebrow. May become stained by local soils and appear browner. The song is very variable and includes the songs of other species.
New Caledonian Thicketbird
Cincloramphus mariae
Extremely shy, smallish, long-tailed brown songbird, found locally throughout New Caledonia. When seen, note warm brown upperparts and flanks contrasting strongly with a white eyebrow, throat, and belly. Prefers scrubby habitats, and most common where there’s a mix of short bushes, dense ferns, and some grass. Best found through its distinctive call note, a dry doubled “ch-tk!”.
