Silver-capped Fruit-Dove
Ptilinopus richardsii
A colorful dove. Males have a bright silver head and chest, green wings, and a bright orange belly and undertail. Females are more uniformly green, with a yellow undertail and a grayish cast to the face. In flight, wings appear strongly blue. Occurs alongside Yellow-bibbed and White-headed Fruit-Doves, but male Silver-capped almost impossible to misidentify. Female is more similar to the other species, but gray face, dark beady eye, and silverish throat are diagnostic. Gives a typical dove-like bouncing, cooing call likened to laughter.

Black-and-orange Flycatcher
Ficedula nigrorufa
Tiny, brightly-colored flycatcher. Female is slightly paler than the male, particularly on the head. In addition to typical “flycatching,” also forages on the ground and in dense undergrowth, like a babbler or fulvetta. Inhabits montane shola forests from 1000 meters upwards. Calls are short bursts of buzzy notes.
Key West Quail-Dove

A smallish, chunky, ground-dwelling species of dense woodlands with thick leaf litter; prefers drier habitats. Secretive but not shy; sometimes detected by the rustling of leaves it is strolling through. The rather similar Bridled Quail-Dove is dull brown rather than reddish or purple on the upper back and it has iridescent turquoise on the sides of its neck. Ruddy Quail-Doves have less contrast in facial markings and the males have an entirely rusty back; some also sport a vertical white shoulder stripe. The Blue-headed Quail-Dove has a blue crown and bib. This species’ song is a soft, low plaintive “hooooooo,” given at a single pitch, but growing gradually louder before dropping off abruptly at the end.
Yellow-legged Tinamou
Crypturellus noctivagus
A very shy and hard to see tinamou, endemic to Brazil. If views allow, note the heavily barred back and vent, rufous belly and throat, yellow legs, dark gray breast, and a pale well-marked eyebrow. Found in forest, scrub, and savanna. The voice is a series of mournful deep hoots: “woo wuh wuh wuh.”
