Gray-hooded Babbler

A plump, mostly ground-dwelling bird with long yellowish legs and a dark gray body with slightly browner wash on the wings and back. Head mostly dark gray, with bright orange beak and whitish crest. Good views may show blood-red bare skin around the eye and throat. Found in mature woodland with open understory. Nests on crater lake islands. Resident, with no record of vagrancy. Very vocal, most frequently heard in groups giving chorus of loud piping whistles and shrill cries. Calls are usually a staccato one-note whistle. Unmistakable, as it is the only scrubfowl in its range.

A small, compact parrot of lower and mid-montane forest and clearings. Green body, red vent, and a barred rump. Only males have a brown head. Similar to Modest Tiger-Parrot, but where they co-occur, Madarasz's Tiger-Parrot is usually at lower elevations. Males are very similar but Madarasz’s has larger diffuse, mustard spots on the back of the head. Female Madarasz's has a green head and strong barring on the back of the head. Call, a quiet, modulated high-low-middle whistle “wit-wu-wii”.

A large, very dark pigeon with a grayish head, a burgundy body with scattered small white spots, and a bright yellow bill and legs. Female is duller than the male. A scarce species found singly and in pairs in the canopy of primary and secondary forest, more frequently above 1300 meters of elevation; attends fruiting trees. Mostly quiet and inconspicuous, but gives a rolling, growling “crrr-crrow-rrrow-rrrow-rrrow” and other low-pitched pigeon-like cooing. Smaller Sao Tome Pigeon has a gray breast and an iridescent green nape and lacks Maroon Pigeon’s yellow feet and bill.
