Black-tailed Waxbill
Glaucestrilda perreini
Pretty little gray waxbill with a black tail and red rump, which is conspicuous in flight. Found along forest edge and in thick woodland. Shy and inconspicuous; usually in small flocks. Call is a long, whistled “tseee”, which is often doubled. Very similar to the localized Cinderella Waxbill, but is darker gray, black-billed, and has gray thighs.

It is found in subtropical/ tropical (lowland) moist shrubland habitats in Angola, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Gabon, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia & Zimbabwe. The status of the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

Jerdon's Bushchat
Saxicola jerdoni
Handsome but uncommon bushchat. Male’s clean black-and-white coloration is unmistakable. Female is rich brown above and white below, without the contrasting throat and eyebrow of the female Gray Bushchat. A lowland and hill species, predominantly found in open areas with medium-height to tall grasses and shrubbery. Hawks flying insects from a conspicuous perch. Song is a brief, sweet descending series of notes ending in a churr.

Kikuyu Mountain Greenbul
Arizelocichla kikuyuensis
Medium-sized chunky greenbul with a broken pale eye-ring. Note the gray head, softly striped cheek, and olive-green underparts. Common and conspicuous in montane forest. Often joins mixed flocks with other bird species. The song is a short series of barking and mewing notes.

A long- and stiff-tailed bird with primarily rusty-brown upperparts and dull orangish underparts. The head, mantle, and neck region are a dull, sooty black. The long graduated tail is pale gray with a wide black terminal band. Note the conspicuous silvery-gray, white, and black patterns on the wings. The blackish-gray bill is stout with a hooked tip. Found in a wide range of habitats from woodlands to scrubby patches, singly or in pairs feeding in the treetops. The call is a loud metallic “krowwiiii kroo.”
