Rio Suno Antwren
Myrmotherula sunensis
Scarce and confusing antwren of lowland rainforest; known from scattered locations throughout the western parts of the Amazon basin. Male is gray with a black bib and white spots on the wings that usually form bars. Female is mostly brown and extremely difficult to separate from several other antwren species. Male is told from male Long-winged Antwren by gray (not whitish) belly, lack of a distinct white tip to the tail, and smaller wing dots. No overlap with the similar Slaty Antwren, which is found at higher elevations. Usually encountered with mixed-species understory flocks, often with other species of antwren. Song is a series of three to five drawn out “swee” notes.

Black-backed Butcherbird
Cracticus mentalis
Medium-sized black-and-white predator with a white chin. Smaller than Australian Magpie, with a black head and face (remember to check for white chin), black back, black wing tips, and mostly black tail. Bill is long and pale with dark, hooked tip. Found on Cape York in open forests and drier areas. Voice is similar to Gray Butcherbird, with rolling chuckling notes.
Rufous-headed Pygmy-Tyrant
Pseudotriccus ruficeps
Tiny, plump flycatcher found in the understory of subtropical and temperate cloud forest in the Andes. Not likely to be confused. Bright rufous head, wings, and tail contrast with olive back and breast. Belly slightly paler yellow. Sexes similar. Flits around the understory in singles or pairs, usually within forest. Best detected by its bill snaps or descending rattle call.
Andean Flicker
Colaptes rupicola
No similar species in its Andean range. Fairly common in open puna and páramo habitats; often near bogs in south of its range and in trees around timberline in north of its range. Mainly feeds on the ground. Nests in cavities in dirt bluffs, walls of old buildings, sometimes in colonies. Note the gray crown and buffy face with a dark whisker (on both sexes, but tipped red on male), big white rump patch, and yellow shafts to wing feathers (mainly visible in flight).
