Blue-billed Malimbe
Malimbus nitens
A distinctive malimbe of lowland forests, particularly favoring lowland swamps with palms and areas near water, often in the understory. Overall glossy black with a triangular red throat patch and a pale gray-blue bill. Occurs in small groups or with mixed-species flocks, sometimes with other species of malimbe. The only malimbe with a combination of entirely dark upperparts, red throat, and black vent. Song includes whistled and mechanical notes with rasps, and calls include short rasping “rhewp” notes.

Pyrrhuloxia
Cardinalis sinuatus
Essentially a desert-dwelling cardinal, found in brushy areas of the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. Shaped much like a Northern Cardinal but with a longer, thinner crest and more rounded bill shape. Plumage is mostly gray with red highlights on the face, crest, belly, wings, and tail. Bill color is usually yellowish, but grayer on immatures. Usually seen in pairs or small flocks, often visiting bird feeders. Song is similar to Northern Cardinal but higher-pitched and more piercing.

Double-toothed Barbet
Pogonornis bidentatus
Large, colorful barbet with a huge ivory-colored bill. Note the red underparts and red bar across the wing. Usually found in the vicinity of fig trees in a variety of habitats, including woodland, gardens, cultivated areas, and forest edge. Most often in pairs or small groups. The calls are rather insect-like: a very fast, dry trill, and a raspy “crick” note. Similar to Bearded Barbet, but separated by the lack of a black chest band. Separated from Black-breasted Barbet by the red rather than black chest.

White-breasted Tapaculo
Eleoscytalopus indigoticus
Small tapaculo, found close to the ground in the dense understory of humid lowland and submontane forests, where it is usually very hard to see. It is plump with a short tail that is usually held cocked. It has a gray head and back with a white breast and a brown streaky vent and rump. The song, a froglike trill, is easily overlooked.
