Moheli Bulbul
Hypsipetes moheliensis
A medium-sized greenish-gray bird with a black cap and a carrot-colored bill, endemic to the middle and high elevations of the mountains of the island of Moheli in the Comoros. Found in humid forest scraps and in adjacent plantations and secondary areas. Often in small, noisy groups. Very similar in appearance to Madagascar Bulbul, and they overlap at moderate elevations, especially in degraded habitats. Moheli Bulbul is separated by the slightly larger size and larger bill, the olive tint to the plumage, especially on the back, and the yellowish tint to the underparts. The song is an unmusical series of rattling and scraping notes, often given from a high perch, similar to Madagascar Bulbul’s, but slightly lower-pitched. The calls include a long, whining note.

Streak-fronted Thornbird
Phacellodomus striaticeps
Chunky, long-tailed tan bird. Found in high-elevation arid scrub with bushes and scattered trees. Pale tan below, reddish brown above, with a fairly heavy bill. Pale throat, thicker bill, and larger size help distinguish it from similar canasteros. Forages in dense bushes and occasionally on the ground. Listen for a series of squeaky yelps: “pyeek, pyeek, pyeek….”
Anjouan Scops-Owl
Otus capnodes
Small, compact dark owl with tiny ear tufts that are often invisible. The overall coloration can be blackish-brown or rufous-brown. Found in remnant rainforest and secondary forest on the island of Anjouan, in the Comoros. The remarkable vocalization, very different from that of a typical scops-owl, is a series of several mournful, descending whistles, each similar to the flight call of Black-bellied Plover. Sometimes two or more birds duet. Easily identified, as the only other owl on Anjouan is the much larger Barn Owl.
White-winged Fairywren
Malurus leucopterus
A small bird with a long blue tail that is held cocked. Breeding males are usually brilliant sapphire blue with bright white wing patches. Females and nonbreeding males are very plain pale gray, and the patch between the eye and bill (lores) is also pale (compared to Purple-backed Fairywren which has very dark reddish lores). This species is typically found in very open and arid country with sparse bushes, where it often perches on the very top of bushes. Its call is a very fast trill.
