Capped White-eye

Zosterops fuscicapilla

A small bird of montane forest and edge. Olive green above, blending to yellow on the belly and under the base of the tail. Note the black face and crown, and prominent white eye-ring. Yellow-mantled Widowbird

Yellow-mantled Widowbird

Euplectes macroura

The long-tailed breeding male is a spectacular and unmistakable black-and-yellow bird. Varies geographically, with some birds showing a completely yellow back, and others only a yellow shoulder. Females and non-breeding males are streaky and brown, though males retain their yellow shoulder. Found in many open habitats, including cultivation, moist grassland, marshes, and forest clearings. The song is a series of harsh “zhet” notes, which the male often gives in a display flight. Female can be confused with several other species, but is usually identified by association with yellow-shouldered males.

Marabou Stork

Marabou Stork

Leptoptilos crumenifer

This huge, macabre-looking stork has a massive dagger-like bill and naked pink head and neck that appear severely sunburned. A white ruff and loose inflatable skin on the neck add to its odd appearance. It soars effortlessly at great heights searching for food; note its white belly in flight. Marabous are equally content in wetlands or in dry bush; they are most frequently encountered lurking near carrion, as they attend kills of major predators and will opportunistically snatch scraps. They also readily scavenge around humans and waste dumps.

Cactus Wren

Cactus Wren

Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus

Large, boldly-marked wren of the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. Look especially for bold white eyebrow and dense spots on underparts. Aptly named, this wren rarely strays from desert scrub with plentiful cactus, usually with areas of open ground. Typically seen in pairs or family groups, which are often quite vocal and conspicuous. Builds a large oval stick nest. Listen for harsh, grating calls.
