Gray-bellied Tesia

Long-legged and short-tailed, this tiny bird moves rapidly and unseen through dark, dense undergrowth like a pint-sized shadow. Yellowish-green above and gray below, with a black line extending through the eye below a pale yellowish eyebrow. Slaty-bellied Tesia is extremely similar, but has a brighter yellowish crown, darker gray underparts, and no pale eyebrow. Gray-bellied breeds in mid- to high-elevation forest, sometimes descending into lower foothills in the winter. Forages in dense undergrowth, particularly near streams and fern or bamboo clusters. Listen for its song: a few clear, high, bell-like notes followed by a brief sputtering explosion of lower notes.

Black-bellied Cuckoo
Piaya melanogaster
Large, long-tailed cuckoo. A fancier version of the more common Squirrel Cuckoo. Look for Black-bellied’s blue-gray crown, bright coral-red bill, and colorful skin around the eye (mostly sky blue with a yellow patch in front of the eye). Fairly widespread across much of Amazonia, where it is uncommon in the canopy of lowland forest. Tends to stay high in the trees; unlikely to be seen at mid or lower levels like Squirrel Cuckoo.
Pale-breasted Thrush
Turdus leucomelas
A common and widespread thrush found in open woodland and forest edge across much of lowland South America. Nondescript: brownish overall with grayer crown, streaked throat, and dingy yellowish bill. Compare with Creamy-bellied Thrush, which is darker overall with dark lores and more contrasting throat streaking. Usually rather conspicuous; singles or pairs can often be seen hopping in the open or feeding in a fruiting tree.

A thrush-sized songbird. Male is entirely glossy-black, while distinctive female has a gray head, a brown back, and a buff underside with extensive barring. Singles, pairs, or small groups inhabit the canopy of forests, edges, and woodlands, from lowlands into foothills. Sometimes joins mixed-species flocks. Differs from Black-faced Cuckooshrike in lacking a clearly demarcated black face. Male is smaller and slimmer-billed than Wallacean Cuckooshrike. Song is a low, three-note rasping “gek-grrrt-grrrt.” Also gives a high-pitched “whit” call.
