Paramo Pipit

A medium-sized, long-tailed bird of montane forest undergrowth. The female is all rufous-brown, rufous tail and dark edging to the wing feathers. Male is very similar to Fan-tailed Monarch, but Black Fantail has a short white eyebrow and lacks the white side stripe. It also has a black and yellow bill. Female is similar to Dimorphic Fantail but larger, brighter rufous with black central tail feathers. Voice, a high-pitch, up-and-down “pluk plik pluk plik!”. Also a high-pitch jumbled warble ending in a loud “wichoo wichoo!”.

Compact tanager of mid-elevation montane forest. Males are black with lighter blue upperparts and flanks, darker blue wings, and an orange patch that extends through the throat and cheek; females are green with a dull orange head. Often forages in pairs with mixed-species flocks, preferring forest edges. Relatively vocal for a tanager, and often noticed through its long, high-pitched buzzy song.

Chunky, rounded songbird with heavy thick bill. Found across a wide range of habitats across its range: largely mangroves in Australia, but also inhabits freshwater swamps in New Guinea and forests and forest edge on smaller islands. Male has an olive-yellow back, black head, white chin, bright yellow underparts, and thick yellow hindcollar. Female plain gray above, paler gray below, with yellow undertail and in some subspecies a yellow belly. Overlaps very marginally with the very similar Golden Whistler in eastern Queensland, but note mangrove habitat as well as slightly longer bill and darker uppertail; also note significant yellow on underparts in female and different song. Vocalizations include variations on whistled songs, sometimes with a whip-like ending.
