Bay Antpitta
Grallaria capitalis
Dark antpitta found in cloud forest along the east slope of the Andes in central Peru. Much of its range is remote and rarely visited by birders. Adult is similar to both Chestnut Antpitta and Rufous Antpitta, but note the larger size, gray crown, thin eye-ring, unbarred belly patch, and voice. The rarely-seen juvenile is even darker with buff and gray barring and a spotted crown. Inhabits forest understory, especially where there is abundant bamboo. Stays on the ground when not singing and usually very tough to see. Song is a quick series that consists of a short note followed by two to five slightly lower notes.

Plain-capped Ground-Tyrant
Muscisaxicola alpinus
Dingy, terrestrial flycatcher found only at very high elevations in the Andes. It has brown upperparts, white underparts, and a white eyebrow. Crown may show a brown tinge, but never bright chestnut like on some other ground-tyrants. Inhabits open areas away from forest. Stands vertically on the ground or a low perch, frequently flicking wings and tail, before suddenly darting after insects and other small prey.
African Cuckoo
Cuculus gularis
A typical Old World cuckoo, with gray-and-white plumage and long wings and tail. Powerful, falcon-like flight. A brood parasite that lays its eggs in the nests of many other bird species. Found in all types of savannah and woodland. Extremely vocal when breeding, giving a distinctive “hoo-hao”. Extremely similar to Common Cuckoo, but has more yellow at the base of the bill; nearly half of the bill is normally yellow. Also similar to Lesser and Madagascar cuckoos, but larger, and without a contrastingly black tail and rump.
Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl
Glaucidium costaricanum
Small owl, active during the day and night. Very similar in plumage to other pygmy-owls, but limited range at high elevation (mostly above 1000m) is a good starting point. Overall brown to rufous with white stripes on belly; look for small white spots on crown and bars on flanks. Sexes alike. Found singly or in pairs in montane forests. Listen for whistled song of doubled notes given on an even pitch.
