Forest White-eye
Zosterops stenocricotus
A small, sharp-billed warbler-like bird that is saturated with yellow. Note the yellow underparts, olive-yellow back, and bold white spectacles around the eyes. Found in forest, gardens, montane shrublands, and plantations, usually in hyperactive flocks that can contain many individuals. Often joins mixed flocks with other small birds. Most common call is a high-pitched rising rattle. Song is a quiet, chatty sequence of “chew” notes. Similar to Northern Yellow White-eye, but slightly darker and greener, and usually separated by range and habitat.

Ringed Storm-Petrel
Hydrobates hornbyi
Handsome small seabird of Humboldt Current; not seen from shore, but breeds inland in Atacama Desert where it visits colonies at night to avoid predators. Plumage unlike all other storm-petrels, with black cap and collar, and white underparts contrasting with dark underwings. Upperparts also striking, with black cap, strong upperwing pattern, and gray tail (no contrasting white rump). Larger than most storm-petrels in its range, but size similar to Markham’s and Black Storm-Petrels, with which it readily associates.

Chestnut-breasted Coronet
Boissonneaua matthewsii
Belligerent hummingbird of Andean cloud forest; ranges from far southwestern Colombia south to Peru. Note green upperparts and hood, chestnut breast and belly, and relatively short bill. Sexes similar. Habitually holds its wings up for a split second after perching. Often seen guarding a favorite flower patch or feeder, chasing away any other hummingbird that dares to come close.

Townsend's Solitaire
Myadestes townsendi
Sleek songbird, a bit smaller than robin and much slimmer. Overall plain medium-gray with short bill, rather long tail, white eyering, and buff patches in wings. Note upright posture and white eyering. Found at higher elevations in the breeding season. Drops into lowlands in the winter. Loves juniper. Song is complex; call is a single, ringing, bell-like note.
