Socotra White-eye

Only described in 2022; endemic to the island of Wangi-Wangi in the Tukangbesi archipelago off the southeastern tip of Sulawesi. Relatively large and lanky for a white-eye, with a striking orangey-yellow bill immediately distinguishing it from Wakatobi White-eye, the only other white-eye on the island. Also note the pale belly and chest contrasting with the relatively dull yellow upperparts and yellow throat. Found throughout the island in patches of taller and denser forest, although uncommon and already declining due to habitat loss and trapping for the cagebird trade. Gives a variety of calls, including a distinctive nasal series and a stuttered "tew-tew-tew." The less commonly heard song is a sweet warbling phrase, slower, lower-pitched, and less rambling than the song of Wakatobi White-eye.

Medium-sized spinetail with a long tail and a black patch on the throat. Like other Synallaxis spinetails it has a rusty crown and wings, but note the grayish face, olive-brown back and tail, grayish breast, and a white chin. It inhabits wet grasslands and open areas with scattered shrubs; often near water. The song is a loud and accelerated series of “chéw, chew-chee-chee-chee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-eu”.

Fairly large hummingbird of brushy woodland, edge and semiopen areas with flowering trees, mainly in drier habitats in southwestern Mexico and neighboring Guatemala. Feeds mainly at middle to upper levels in trees. Combination of bright white underparts (throat sometimes stained yellow by pollen) and bright red bill with black tip are distinctive. Male and female similar, but male has a more coppery, less greenish tail. The crown is deep green, unlike similar Violet-crowned Hummingbird, which occurs to the north of Green-fronted.
